The KZN Film Commission partners with higher educational institutions through Human Capital Development with;  qualified professionals, and aspiring youth through; training programmes (Technical skills), FITI programme ( graduate programme) and Bursaries.

It is through the long standing relationship that KZNFC has with local tertiary institutions  that the Simon “Mabhunu” Sabela Statue has found a new home at AFDA Higher Education institution in Durban Campus.  The statue was created in 2019, as an award prop for the KZN Film Commission’s Simon “Mabhunu” Sabela KZN Film and Television Awards. The awards are an initiative of the Department of Economic Development Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) and supported by the KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission, they are aimed at celebrating the craft of film making and encouraging aspiring and established film makers. The statue symbolises,  strength and power it was created in honour of the late South African Film legend and icon. What better way to celebrate the legendary icon than housing it at AFDA, Durban Campus amongst other young upcoming legends.

AFDA is the no. 1 Film, TV and Performance school on the continent, fully accredited institution with 25 years’ experience in the tertiary education landscape. It is an internationally recognized institution and is a full member of CILECT – an international organization that represents over 170 Film and TV schools and includes USC (LA) and UCLA (LA), TISCH (NY), Columbia (Chicago), La Femis (Paris), GVIK (Russia), to mention but a few.

On Friday, 16th April at 09:00 am the KZN Film Commission will be officially revealing the Simon ‘Mabhunu’ Sabela statue in its new home at AFDA Durban Campus. This will be a symbolic day for both the KZN Film Commission and AFDA.

The studio was developed from, one large studio to a four-venue space.
