The stage is set for the 2015 Simon Mabhunu Sabela Film Awards to be held at Durban’s Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre on 19 July 2015 at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli ICC.
The awards, an initiative of the KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs are implemented by the KZN Film Commission and named in honour of the late South African Film legend and icon Mr Simon Mabhunu Sabela. They are aimed at recognising outstanding achievers and excellence within South African and international film industry.
Speaking at an event to announce the Award nominees earlier today, the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Michael Mabuyakhulu said the awards had shown a tremendous growth in stature since they were first launched in 2013. “The awards have seen a tremendous growth from just six categories in 2014 to 13 categories this year. We are pleased with the enthusiasm in which the call for nominations was received by film industry players nationally as well as the general public.”
KwaZulu-Natal has begun to see a steady growth in the number of productions filmed in the province with the hugely popular television Uzalo being entirely filmed in the province.
“Local film makers are now taking advantage of the province’s diverse and unique locations, good weather as well as talent; a fact that is reflected in the quality of nominees received in the various categories of the 2015 Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards,” Mabuyakhulu said.
The Chief Executive Officer of the KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission, Carol Coetzee, said: “KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission remains committed to creating an enabling environment that will ensure growth and transformation in the local film industry. We take this opportunity to congratulate all those who have been nominated in the various categories and wish them the best of luck.”
